Marked by delusions (persecutory, erotomania , grandiose, jealous, somatic, mixed/unspecific etc.) and hallucinations (auditory and visual, tactile, olfactory, etc.) that are experienced for over a month, and persistent for more than six months that are not as a result of any medication to have caused any physiological effects. Schizophrenia is debilitating mental illness that can lead to “failure to achieve expected level of interpersonal, academic, occupational functioning” as noted by the American Psychiatric Association. Schzophrenia has both positive and negative symptoms. For example, avolition is a negative symptom of schizophrenia causes decrease in motivation to do anything, which is quite different from laziness.

Fortunately we welcome patients with and without insurance plans. The good news is psychiatric care is covered by insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The ACA requires insurance plans to cover mental health. If in doubt, please contact your insurance company.
